I've gathered some 1-1/4inch black iron pipe, and built roller bearings ala JK. I picked up some hammerite paint, about $8.00 in hardware, and Some 1/2 - 10 ACME precision threaded rod from MSCdirect.com. Tomorrow I'm going to Lowes to pickup some MDF. I'm still working out the cut sheet for the wood, adapting from my own needs, and JGRO open source plan. I'll provide pictures as I start working out fit and finish. I've also obtained one stepper motor from an HP LJII, an Astrosyn 23LM-C701-01, 5.2V, 1.4A. It's a beginning. I haven't decided whether to bravely buy the hobbycnc board or the Xylotex. Budget is tight, however soldering skills are rusty..... I'd appreciate any suggestions as I go. I'll post intermediate assembly and designs prior to assembly. Thanks for all of the borrowed ideas, inspiration, and can do attitude, I see from everyone!!

I just finished the Hobby cnc 3 axis chopper board and couldnt belive how easily it went together. I'm not the worlds greatest at soldering but it only took me 1-1/2 hours and the motors were spinning. I got the board/motors combo. Darren

Thanks for the info! I was worried about putting my money into something I wouldn't have the skills to complete. Now, I can save the difference between the zylotex board and the HobbyCNC board, and put that into other parts, or tooling!

Where would you rate your electronic and soldering skill level( 1-10).

A 3 right now. It's been several years since I've done any real soldering. Last time was simple component replacement of a PC board mount power plug.

Update, at long last!! I finally pulled some time from work and elsewhere, and got some more progress on router project.... Pictures soon to follow. I bought the new three axis 4aupc controller board kit from HobbyCNC. Great kit, great service! Can say enough good things about Dave's services. Picked up an old craftsmen router from the local pawn shop for $20. It'll do for a start... I've built the y and z axis, most of the gantry. The y and z both slide easily, though I still have to get a few coupler parts in to mount the acme leadscrews. Next up is the x axis and setting up the wiring and electrical. Does anyone have the pinout/wiring diagram for the HP Laserjet motors? AstroSyn steppers, unipolar, six wire......

I have the hp lj III motors, and i used the wire color chart that came from hobby cnc when i got the board from dave (easy kit to work with), it is in there exactly what color goes where. Use the Japan servo 6 wire.

Thanks, Joe! I've thus far resisted the urge to spin motors, but the time is fast approaching!!.... Last edited by lurch; 02-25-2005 at 04:43 AM. Reason: smiley removal

Lurch, Great name. Brings the image of some humped back geezer saying 'You rang' ![]() Anyway looking forward to following your thread. It's good to learn from each other. The resist to spin the motor's kicks in quick so I'll count the posts before you announce you went cold turkey and just had to do it ! Good luck.
