I would have expected it to be connected to the gantry!

second question, do you have a thrust bearing somewhere in the top of the z drive train?
    can't see

    v nice pictures btw
good luck with the rest of the build
Thanks... Yes I plan on having a flanged bearing tossed in there somewhere.

    aha thanks for that
    sorry to repeat myself
but I'm still surprised by the "extra" (x-axis) motor that's visible
I would have expected to see it at the end of the x-axis
(so less weight to throw around)
(ok mass but you know what I mean!)

or is it gonna be R&P?

Most designs have the motor on the side running a lead screw, my design turns a steel reinforced timing belt running the length of the gantry. It is also geared in the back so I can adjust the speed and torque if I want.

Talking Angle grinding jig prototype - :)

    - Been pretty sick this past week but tossed together this jig to grind 45 degree V angles in 3/4" steel angle. So far working better then expected. Actually works perfect. Happy to say it cost less then $20 in parts.

    - Still adding a few more features I have planned. Adding a measuring gauge to measure each pass and completing a few additional jigs that attach to this one to make it also cut 90 degree angles in addition to the 45's.

    Grinder jig specs.

    Thanks @Giz

It was much nicer looking until I started experimenting with oils and grease then did some grinding on it. LOL

I plugged in the dimensions into software so it can be recreated. If someone wants to try it out let me know. The only possible issue is what grinder you choose to use. I just picked up a $20 one from a Manards so I wouldn't have to tie up my good grinder. So if your grinder is longer, shorter, wider etc you may need to make a few minor adjustments.

The whole jig is made from 1 piece of 2'x2' 3/4" birch ply.

    You will need:
    (1) 2'x2' 3/4" sanded or birch plywood sheet.
    (2) 3 1/2" U-Bolts
    (Various) #8 wood screws 1 1/4", 3/4" and 2 1/2" lengths
    (1) 12" screw (I used 5/16" to match Bearing ID)
    (6) 5/16" NUTS (whatever matched your lead screw)
    (2) Skate bearings 5/16" ID or 8mm ID / or you can not use these. Used in the crank shaft on the far end.
    (2) 1" L-Brackets
    (4) 2 1/2" L-Brackets
    (1) 2-3" 1/4" screw with washers and nuts (used for the crank handle)
    (1) Piece of tubing (used on the crank handle to allow for rotation around the handle bolt)
    (1) 1" Aluminum channel 1/16" thick (SIZE needs to be adjusted if not grinding 3/4" angle steel as I am.)
    (1) Cam clamp
    (1) Ruler (cut down and drilled to allow movement and setup measurements. If this is confusing I can explain more later)

    Tools you will/may need
Grinder 4 1/2" with NICE metal disk (obviously)
    Drill
    #8 Coutersink bit
    5/6" Bit
    3/8" Bit
    1/2" Bit
3/4" Fostner bit (if using bearings)
    Screwdriver
    Saw
    Locktite BLUE
    Wood glue
    Wrench
Accurate Square edge w/ 45 degree measurement.

That's all I can think of right now.
