It happens to all of us. I could write a very depressing novel about some of my less than humorous escapades.

In it's early days, WD-40 ran advertising in hunting magazines claiming "WD-40, Slicker than snot on a doorknob!" The first time I saw the ad I nearly split my sides laughing at that crude remark. It sure endured the brand in MY mind.

Sounds like the maul tweaks were successful. That's the thing I like about steel frame construction. Very workable material. When I only had a power drill and a hacksaw everything seemed like too much work and I hated it. With power hacksaw, MIG, Plasma torch, and milling machine on hand it has become much more friendly for me to work with for home projects.

Oh yeah, before you go any farther, I recommend masking off 3/8" to 1/2" of the rail edges both sides and painting it, or waxing the whole rail on all four sides with Boeshield or carnuba wax if you don't want to paint it, to prevent rust formation. It will save you a lot of maintenance later.

Once you have everything aligned precisely and carriages adjusted you will be happy you did this now instead of needing to do it later. You can easily reapply the carnuba wax on the unpainted parts where the bearings roll once a year or as needed. I do it to all of my unpainted cast iron and aluminum tools like the table saw table, bandsaw table, jointer table, milling machine table, spindle sander table, etc. It keeps them slick and rust free.
