I'm a control engineer, and also play with electronics. (my degree was in electronic engineering.) I came across hobby cnc by chance and it looks damn interesting. I've done some home work and wanted to do everything from scratch, even the PC software, BUT this is really re-inventing the wheel.
I'm currently looking for stepper motors (1.8deg , 200 steps, around 5 volts)
Where could i possibly look to buy 4 stepper motors from?
You probably want to run bipolor. 5 v will give very little power, the formula for calculating voltage is 32 * sqrt inductance. I would urge you to buy a gecko if you are this new to steppers. If you really want to do your own read ALL of Mariss's posts and try your hand with a coorunner II cpld or a cypress
PSoC. They have a nice industrial stepper design. Pwm needs to be changed to synchronous kill which should be no problem; you would also need to add a 80 deg phase shift modification to fix the midband resonance problem and some low speed morphing from microstep to quad. If this seems to daunting buy a gecko.
