    ACME THREADS

I AM CUTTING A RATHER LARGE ACME THREAD USING FORMED INSERTS. IT WORKS BUT NOT WELL. THE BOSSES RECENTLY PAID A VISIT TO ANOTHER COMPANY AND WHILE THERE NOTICED THEY WERE CUTTING LARGE ACME THREADS 10"+ WITH GROOVING TOOLS. I BEEN THINKING ON IT AND LIKE THE IDEA BUT I AM STRUGGLING TO GET THE IDEA OFF THE GROUND. I TRIED CONTACTING THE COMPANY WERE THIS WAS BEING PRACTISED BUT THEY WERE NOT WILLING TO LET THERE TRADE SECRET GO. IF ANYBODU HAS ANY IDEAS OR SUGGESTIONS LET ME KNOW. THANK YOU!

They were probably not cutting the entire thread with a grooving tol but simply roughing it out then finishing it with the form tool. The chip flow on an acme form tool is not good because the chip from the flank(s) comes in at an angle and binds up with the chip coming from the front edge. If a grooving tool is used to first cut a square groove which is then opened up to the final form using two passes, one on each flank using the form tool, you can avoid this chip interference and get a better finish.
An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.

Just a bit of "netiquette". I notice that your posts are in ALL CAPS. This is considered to be SHOUTING, and is generally considered to be rude.

Would love for your bosses to take some pictures of that 0 degree grooving tool cutting a 29 degree Acme thread form. I will even offer them cash for the photos. Please pass it on.
