    Cutting deeper than cutting length

I have a tool that has 1/2" length of cut. Can I create a 90 degree walled, pocket that is deeper than 1/2"? The tool is the same diameter as the cutter.

    That would be "no"

If you try to cut deeper than the area with cutting flutes, the shank of the tool will rub on the side wall, so you won't get any cutting action. If you can't live with a slight step in your pocket, then get a tool with a longer cutting length. The only exception would be in the case of a tool with a fluted area larger in diameter than the shank of the tool. It would be able to cut deeper, but there aren't many end-mills like that.

I have used reduced shank end mills a lot over the last 16 years. In reference to your post, this means buying a new tool. I have been known to grind my own. From what I have seen of the skill level in the industry, I would not recommend grinding your own.

Depends on what type of material you're working with. Going deeper than the flute length is achievable in a pinch. Be sure to use some lubrication especially when the shank of the cutter is rubbing on the sidewall.

Put the endmill in a spindex and relieve it back as far as you need to.....super simple.
