    Question cutting steel with cheep V-bits?

    Hello everyone... I want to cut steel,i guess its "mild steel",with cheap carbid V-bits i bought from china on ebay( V-bits,angle 10-20°, tip 0.1mm) but i am afraid tip would broke on steel. i have homemade machine,spindle can run from 10 000-35 000 RPM. . can someone tell me is it possible to cut steel with it?what feed can i use? and is tehre any treatment taht can make this steel softer? thank You

    chances are slim to none of the v bits surviving
    cutting steel on your router will depend upon how well built the router is and how you approach your cuts , rigidity is necessary for steel cutting and heat at those rpms will be the thing to beat .
    overall if you you have a good system with good tool paths then its do-able , but most likely you'll need high speed toolpaths

    my spindle is crapy and it has only 160W...but it can cut this steel when i use 2mm carbide endmill,0.25mm-stepdown, 1mm-stepower, feedrate 140mm/min.. but since V-bit has tip only 0.1 i wonder,maybe this steel can be heattreated to become soft... i was adviced to do cementation treatment later to harden it cos its for dies...can it be softened ? its some ordinary steel....

    Softer metals gum up bits more -- I wouldn't expect that to help the situation, but it is possible through annealing. (This is usually done to help bending, not milling.) Harder more brittle metals mill better.

    The spindle speed range also looks really high for steel work...as dertsap said, heat will be your enemy. I've done stainless at 4000rpm (the lowest the machine would go) with coolant and a compressor nozzle blasting the work area and still had a nice dull glow on the endmill bit.

    A V cutter will of course be more difficult. This is the kind of job I'd sub out to a pro with a 6-axis waterjet.
