Star SB-16 type D programming questions

I am new to swiss type machines and the person who gave me a "Crash course" to this machine uses G120 for the coordinate system. Other people I have spoken to use G50. Is there a difference or benefit of using one over the other? Also does anyone reccomend any training classes for learning more about these machines. I can make parts but would like a better understanding of it. I recently tried using a G76 threading cycle and found that it is nothing like a G76 cycle you would typicaly use. I have also been having overtravel problems (Head 1) at the end of my programs or at the start of the next part.Could someone please explain the correct way to end a program? Thank You

Where are you located? Your nearest Star distributor should be able to help you with training, but if you're in New England....I could help you for less money and/or barter. I'm pretty familiar with that quirky machine.

During your part setup determine the appropriate stroke length needed by your main spindle. I just eyeball it frankly with the jog function. Once you reach your desired length, MDI the G120 command. In your part program you should have a G121 command at the beginning. This will return your machine to the predetermined G120 position you established. I hope this helps.

    G120

G120 differs from G50 in that once G120 is established regardless of where the face of the part is your subcollet knows where the face of the part is, if you command G130 in Head 2.

    Head 2

    G130
    G0Z-.5(.500 FROM PART FACE)
    M68
    G1G98Z.5F25.(FEEDS OVER PART .5)
    M69
    M10
    (CUTOFF)
    G0G99W-.5
    G131(CANCEL)
    G0Z0T0
    M99

Our SB16 will not read a G120. So we manually set the G120 and have the G121 Code recall it.
