Need suggestions for drilling .81 deep .037 dia. in X15t.n which is similar to 420 SS. Running Citizen C16. Using Atom ADLL series carbide Drill. Ran this part in 440C for over a year with no problem part was changed to X15t.n now it is wreaking havoc on my drills. Any suggestions for feeds, speeds and or peck cycle data would be appreciated! |

Saw this at IMTS in the Tsugami booth... YouTube - TriboMAMThough I think it's priced out of reach for most. Aside from that my "Gotos" for drilling are... Mitsubishi, Guhring and Titex Would also speak to your local tooling house for direction as they are usually looking for problems to solve and generally willing to supply test/trial tooling. | While the Tribomam system is pretty cool, and does work, the owner of the company told me @IMTS that the starting price for a system is around 30K. I would suggest contacting the manufacturer of the drill to get proper SFM info as well as look into getting the drill coated. A good knowledgable tooling sales rep should be able to get you atleast in the ballpark of where you need to be. Dont be afraid to call them, most manufacturers would rather speak to you and make sure you are happy with their product than risk you trying someone elses products. Good Luck |

You described the problem as wreaking havoc on drills. From a tooling perspective, we need a little more info. Are the tools breaking? Are they wearing out? Are chips clodding the flutes preventing good evacution? |

| I've had good luck on similar hole sizes and material. Using Carbide drills, I normally just peck drilled at 5000RPM, .0003/rev .020 peck depth. Using HSS, I ran similar, but I had an issue with the drill flexing when rapiding back into the part after pecking. I solved that by writing a macro to feed back into the hole .010 past the drill tip lead (will depend on drill angle--I prefer 135) and then rapiding to .010 from previous peck depth. Note, I've had limited qty runs every time I've ran these and we had a depth-sensitive hole. I could have maybe been more aggressive on my feed/peck depending on drill, but priority was getting the parts out the door and not wasting time replacing broken drills if they broke. |

| If you have an extra tool position, I would try using a short carbide circuit board drill to drill about half way and then switch to a longer carbide drill. I am drilling .024" diameter holes in 416 heat treated material using only .0003" feed rate and pecking about .03". On the material I am machining I am able to run the tool at 7500 RPM. |
