Hi Mike - here is a recipe I pulled off a previous post on the forum here. I have tried it and it works well. Materials available on Ebay. PLASMA QUENCH RECIPE Here's the recipe for home-made PlasmaQuench 1/4 pound of sodium nitrite powder ($15/pound) 1 teaspoon of Physan 20 ($8/8oz bottle) 1 oz Ultramarine blue food-grade dye ($5/oz.) Mix well, treats 75 gallons of water. |

For the cut quality concerns....you need to prvide a little more info! 1. What type and model plasma system 2. Height control system....accuracy, does it have initial (pierce ) height capability? 3. On what material and thickness are you cutting .4" dia holes with excess taper? Jim Colt

Jim colt I have powermax 1000 my electronics are from Tom at candcnc with his torch hieght controller I am now sure how accurate our homemade table is what is the best way to check this and to set the backlash. The material is .375 steel. Thanks Mike

I am not the motion control design expert.....just the plasma guy! I guess to check backlash I would somehow lock the drive motor shafts....place a dial indicator on the gantry and the torch carriage...then put pressure in each direction and record the dial indicator reading. I'm not sure what you mean by "setting the backlash". Jim

Backlash is really the difference in movement in two directions. You have to take the backlash out first, So move some amount in positive x first. Then set a dial indiactor up and move positive x .5 ( assuming you have a 1 in travel indicator ) Confirm it moved .500, if it doesn't you have other problems. Now move the indicator on the other side and move back .5 in. If you have backlash it will read a shorther distance.... The key to checking backlash is to move in a direction to take it out. Then, the second move must be in the same direction. Third move, then move back to the starting place. Aj
