Slat holder thickness?

My table is underway. I downloaded a .dxf of slat holders from Jcar's thread to have cut out for my table. Only thing I missed was the thickness of part. It will be welded to the sides of the table - how thick should this piece be to hold the slats??

plain ol bill,

I cut my slat holders out of 10 ga (.134") thick material. Good luck on your table.

jcar,

Jcar I was hoping you would drop in on this thread. That table you built has got to be one of the nicest I have seen to date. I can only hope mine will show craftsmanship like it. Mine will be a 5x10 w/ table size of 62x122. I am at the point of starting to install the air chamber and seal weld it in. It's not nice to get old guys - I made my living welding for almost 50 years and between eyesight, the shakes, and arthritis I'm ashamed of some of the welds on this table. Don't think it will leak but it sure ain't pretty not more! I decided to go w/ "V" wheels and track.

Thanks plain ol Bill. I'm sure your 50 years of welding experience makes my welds look like cow manure. I had to spot a few of my welds twice to make my table hold water. Several thick coats of paint didn't hurt either. My Dad has a little bit of the shakes too and I swear it gives him a natural weave that makes the pretties beads I've ever seen.

Good to see that your table is started.

This might be a good time to start a new project log in that forum area, with some descriptions & explanations of your build. Pictures always help with understanding also.

You have done your homework, reading, & asking questions, so I wish you well with the remainder of your project.

Kit is your dad isn't he Jacar? I seem to remember him posting something about you making a plasma table. His knives sure don't look like he has the shakes at all. Sure wish you had a good drawing of the drive system you made for your table. I think that is one area I might have trouble with.

I'm really ashamed of the welds on this table. I used my wire welder and should have stuck to the old stick machine. I put water in the bottom of it today to check the welds on the bottom before putting the air chamber plates on and the bottom didn't leak so I guess pretty welds aren't that important.

Kit is indeed my Dad. Get him behind the Burr-King and everything is as smooth as silk. He showed me a damascus bowie he's been working on, this afternoon, and it's absolutely beautiful. His skill still blows my mind.

What kind of drawing files can you accept? All of my design work was done in Solidworks, but I may be able to export another format for you.

Well if Kit is your Dad you are a lucky man and have access to some great tools to boot! It was my pleasure to meet Kit at Blade in Atlanta several years ago and BS with him for awhile over a drink in the pit. I'm a knifemaker also but of not nearly the same skills of your dad. I am one of the Timascus guys that your sister made rings with using our material.
If you can output a file in .dxf from solidworks that would be great. I use Autosketch from the Acad people or Corel mostly. Sure would appreciate a drawing of that drive. I will leave a private msg. for you w/ my email addy.
