| The Village Press published an article originally by Robert Langlois in book form, some time ago for a home built EDM, it may still be available from: The Home Shop Machinist. P.O. box 629, Traverse City, Mich 49685 1-800-447-7367 It was US$17.00 when I got my copy.It shows the mechanics and electronics, including schematics for stepper driver etc. Al

| There are no free plans that I have ever heard of. If you want to learn about EDM from the theory side up download the russian book (translated) from my site: www.indoor.flyer.co.uk/edm.htm A patent search will also teach you a heck of a lot. I bought plans from Camtroncs but would rather build a switched unit than a relaxation based one (RC type) as they are much faster and should be easy these days. Graham |

| Graham, i downloaded the Russian book. Mighty interesting! I must say things have changed a bit since the '50's..... Klox

| Like I say have a look at some patents: http://ep.espacenet.com Do an advanced search. No plans for such a unit as far as I know but I would really like to build one myself at some point it should be fairly simple these days. People get hung up on super hightech ways of doing the gap regulation etc but I have even used a sinker EDM manually using the crosslide, I just monitored the current by eye, not as fast but shows it does not have to be too high tech for hobby use. The main thing hobby machines do seem to lack is decent flushing, a decent pump will yeild much improved cutting speeds even with the most crude generator design. What is your application BTW? | Electrical Discharge Machining - in other word the part is produced by a controlled spark erosion process. A search of EDM should probabally bring up some sites. Al

| Hi anon, if you have access to The Model Engineer, an English bi-weekly magazine, and can get the back numbers then there is a complete design to make a small EDM or spark erosion machine, using a stepper motor and the transformer used in a valve radio. The issues, which dates back to 16th July 1976 are volume 142, no. 3541 and 3542. You will probably find the books on EBAY or at a model club. Ian. |
