Downdraft VS. Watertable

How do you actually clean a water cable. Does it get mudlike?

Please list pros and cons. I am leaning toward downdraft systems but what do know what others think.

we had a couple at a company i worked at before and they worked incredibly well ,
we did a lot of steel cast and the air and machines stayed clean , as far as cleaning goes i am not too sure as that wasn t part of my dept. ,i don t think they were anything too bothersome .
one thing that a guy has to keep in mind is it is necessary to have one designated for steel and another for aluminum ,
we had a guy quickly light one up when he decided to grind some steel on the aluminum table , it was reduced to maybe being good for roasting a pig at a company bbq

I'm generally against water tables due to the high running cost. A typical figure to get a table water pumped and disposed of is about 10 grand. Water does work though... but downdraft is generally a better environment to work in if it's setup correctly.

Can I ask what the watertable is intended to do? I assume it captures all the little metal particals and dust generated from a plasma. Why is it so expensive? Does it have a reservoir and filters? I thought they were just pools of water.

I'm working on a small plasma project that I would like to be able to run inside my garage. The plasma will stay within a 12" x 12" area so setting up a small water catch underneath isn't that big of a deal.

This is loaded question, but what don't I know? And Dertsap, can you elaborate on what happened switching from alum to steel?

Thanks

the downdraft is used for deburring and grinding , when the guy ground steel on the table meant for aluminum , the grinding lit up the aluminum dust and there was an immediate out of control fire
luck would have it that the fire dept was there quickly or we would have lost more than just the table

The water in the water table keeps smoke and dust to a minimum. I feel a water table is the way to go. On smaller tables the air table works ok. On larger tables you need a huge fan that blows outside, this may be fine in warmer climates, but here you would be spending big dollars to heat all of the incoming air.

Here's mine:

I'm currently designing a water table for my 4x4 table. I ended up building a booth around mine and use a big attic fan to vent to the outside. Keeps the shop clean but the machine inside the booth gets real nasty. I am constantly clean the slides and drives.
