do you guys think this would be a good setup for just plasma cutting or
should i just stick to trying to get a rack and pinion set up

Seems a bit difficult to interpret the photo details & size.
The thumbnail when opened, shows only a slightly larger image.
Is that a belt drive mechanism?
Any additional information might get more responses.

it is a
0.20XL timing belt with a 15 tooth timing pulley mounted to the motor
what do ya think? is this not very durable for plasma

depends a lot on where its mounted and if you have dust collection. it could probably survive if it was above the gantry. what type of motor does it have? what if any gear reduction? etc.
it always helps to have more information.
