FANUC 21i-M battery failure / How to rebuild params from scratch

    Folks,

I have a CNC router table that I recently got so cheap that I couldn't pass up the deal. I have extensive experience programming FANUC controls to run code, and I have extensive experience building CNC machines using PC based controls such as EMC2 and Mach. I also have limited experience working in the parameter table of the 21i form another machine. WHat I am missing is extensive experience starting out with a fresh 21i control and setting it up from scratch.

Here's the question. The new CNC router table has been sitting without power for quite some time and I have no idea what the status of the battery is. For the sake of discussion, lets assume that all batteries are dead. The control is a 21i-M with Alpha series servo drivers (red cap). What I would like to know is what should I expect to be gone if the batteries have died completely in this control? Im guessing the parameter table would likely be lost, but would the ladder in the PMC also be gone?

The machine has no real identifying markings on it that indicate a manufacturer that I can tell, but it is a pretty stout piece of equipment that appears to have commercial origins. A link to a picture is included in the post so that if anyone recognizes it, maybe they could clue me in to the manufacturer and I can try going that route as needed.

The machine will be delivered in about a week and I would like to hit the ground running in the event that i need to reconstruct the control logic from scratch. I have no problem learning to do the necessary programming in the ladder, but a practical starting point would be helpful. RTFM is well underway. Are there any example complete ladders out there (I know each one is machine specific, but having a well commented example to look through would be academically helpful).

    Thanks!

...and for the safety conscious, all testing of code will be done with the servos decoupled from the ballscrews and pneumatic actuators in safe positions and low pressure.

I've never seen the ladder or software lost with failed batteries. Can't see the pic on my iPad with tapatalk. Sorry.

So I'm most likely only looking at having to reconstruct the parameter table? Machine pics attached, just figured the link would be easier. The Stock electronics cabinet includes the fanuc AC supply and one alpha 3 axis servo amp. IO uses an AIF01A with two AID16D input modules and one AOR16G output module.

I assume you never saw it powered? You may be expecting the worse unnecessarily, on the later machines the batteries lasted a considerable time.
The user parameters you can get from the manual, the option parameters will not be know, however as they are purchased with the machine.

I haven't seen it powered yet, but did pay it a visit yesterday to check things out prior to scheduling the movers to go get it. The documentation pocket in the cabinet has manuals for some of the individual components along with the wiring diagrams, but a full review of what was there didn't yield either a manufacturer and model number or a parameter table printout.

It may be fine when I light it up. THe way I'm looking at it is that the knowledge gained trying to get a head start on this can only benefit me later, so it isn't wasted effort even if I don't need it immediately.

I'm with al on this, I've had batteries last for years with the machine off.
