I need some advice regarding how to change settings, if possible that control the speed of my cutting head and gantry when changing direction between cuts (is that backlash?). I use mach 3 and depending on the design I am cutting somewhere around 40 inch/min. the steppers "skip a beat" (inconsistently)and the design is thrown off. If the tool path is mostly straight then I don't have as much of a problem. One intervention I have tried is to take smaller cuts and that does help. Still though, it's the movement between cuts on the tool path that causes the problem. Somehow I think I need to slow those changes down during that part of the path and then speed up once the change is direction has occurred. The machine is adjusted and calibrated accurately so I don't think that those mechanics cause the problem. What can I do, or where should I look to make the above changes? Thanks for any help

The software your using for generating your g code should have some options in the post processor for setting the traverse speed and your cut speed.
Mach is pretty handy for viewing the g code , so if you hit feed hold when the problem happens , you can look back and see what was going on.
It sounds like something else might be going on.
I would set the rapid speed and cut speed the same and see if the problem still happens . Just as a test of course.
