This thread was started way back a few years ago with my original CNC build. It's kinda been my running log of what I have done over the years. I'm really bad on documenting my builds. If I do I'll start a new thread but I'll probably end up just posting a few pics of the final build. I have three other builds going on simultaneously right now.

Jfong, et al, Nice layout, definitely would like to see where it goes. Your layout closely mirrors my rebuild project, it must be some type of universal truth in design. The posts are coming faster then I can keep up, I just started a new thread for "8020 Laser Rebuilds" showing where I am a heading.

I forgot to post this one I finished....

This is a Eggbot CNC I made with leftover junk pile aluminum and motors. I did buy the Eibot board from Evilmadscientist.com. I need to make a better pen holder out of aluminum. This is just a mock up in plywood so I can get approximate dimensions. The steppers are small nema23 motors that I had laying around. The bottom base is a leftover piece of 80/20 extrusion.

    Made it for the kids....

    Default 80/20 extrusion router build

Found some brushless motors and drivers on eBay that I couldn't pass up.

Copley Xenus XJS-230-10 brushless servo drivers and Parker CM162 motors. These motors are small with about 50oz-in continuous and 150 peak. Still plenty for a lot of applications. The drivers are both analog and step/dir input. Direct AC powered so no external supply required. It came with all motor cables and connectors which can be costly if you had to purchase them. I bought three complete sets for $200 total. I believe just one of the Copley drives are about $1000 new. The motors and drives have been tested just fine on my bench. I did have to make custom serial cable for configuration with the Copley Windows software. Now I have to figure what I will be using them for.

Update on the K40 laser: it's been running great since I bought it. Minor lens and belt adjustments so far. Cut plenty of 3mm Baltic birch for crafts and such for Christmas. Made a 1911 rubber band gun for my nephew. I find it really easy to just draw something up, place ply on laser bed and cut. Much faster than having to setup the CNC to do a similar cutout.

This is a vector image of a world map done on the k40 laser. Instead of using the engraving raster function, I "cut" the vectors. I set the laser power low enough to only burn the top layer of the birch ply. This is much faster to do than the line by line raster engraving. Took less than 5minute to "cut" and looks much cleaner . Almost like ink on wood.

Cut speed was 30mm/sec. If you have a nice clean vector image you want to engrave, try this method out.

    Some minor laser mods.

Installed 12volt led strip lighting purchased from eBay for few dollars. New flojet water pump that my brother gave me and 5 gallon bucket of water. Also installed the lightobjects water flow sensor. All powered by spare 12volt supply I had laying around. I put it inside the case next to the laser supply.

I moved the 4" inline blower to the end closer to the outside vent. This way it is sucking the air through all the vent hose instead of blowing. Less chance of any smoke escaping.

A new toy. Found this lathe on CL for $95 yesterday. Bad start capacitor but the motor runs fine if you give it a little turn. Came with bed extension. I need to figure out how mount it near the gantry router so I can use it to do rotary turning.

    Great Lightening Strike of 2017

House took a direct hit yesterday. Took out most everything in my CNC workshop. Multiple computers running the four CNC's, servo/stepper drives, power supplies, stuff that was plugged into the network. My main workstation won't power on. Furnace won't turn on, appliances. C02 laser, 3d printer I was working on. Laptop power bricks. The list goes on. Surge protectors didn't help at all.

Looks like all the woodworking shop machines survived. Most of my electronic lab instruments turn on but don't know what kind of damage yet.

Even the damn garage door opener died. A battery operated wall clock stopped at exactly 4:16 pm, time of the strike. Took out the battery and put it back in, it started working again. Weird stuff. No one was home at the time, so no one got hurt. Very thankful about that and no fire. Smell of toasted electronics though.

    Back to square one......Damn

Sorry to hear about the damage to your equipment. Before retirement I was an engineer for a large power company. I've looked at many homes that sustained damage similar to yours. You better look at all of the wiring you can get to in your home. It's not uncommon to have wire insulation melted in places you can't see.

I was working on my corexy 3d printer frame when the lightening took out the motor drivers etc. Got around to installing new steppers, drivers and power supply.

Its faster than you can extrude plastic. In the video, it is step rate limited by the 8 bit arduino. Its maxed out at 30khz step pulse rate. I just got a 32bit re-arm for ramps board that I'll be using instead. Up to 100khz step rate so it should go faster but really more for smoother motion capability.

It also helps to use good stepper drivers rather than the drv8825 or a4988 that most use.

Another video moving a 123block. This is much heavier than the e3d hot end that I will be using. Should be no problem moving the actual hot end extruder at high acceleration settings.

Got my K40 laser working again. The original M2nano controller card blew a few semiconductor parts by the USB connector. I replaced it with a Cohesion3d Mini that runs Smoothie. Front end is Laserweb4. It can now do PWM control of the laser output power. Images such as this can be easily done.

Thanks. The gantry is up and running now. Needed a replacement computer and rs485 adapter for the VFD.

The bench mills and lathe are still down.

Jfong - I started reading this thread from the beginning and I got about half way through before I had to quit. I must say, you've made some amazing machines!
Also glad to see your re-building from your lightning strike.

Thanks, This thread has become a running log of things I've done over the years. Helps me remember just what I did....

Priority has been to get the house back in order. Received the insurance check last week so ordered the replacement major appliances. Of course the money they give you isn't enough to cover everything. I had a pretty high deductible. My workshop "toys" will just have to wait until I get extra funds to fix them.
