Default 4 x 8 CNC router design - Will it work?

It's been a CRAZY summer and this project had to be put on hold. I now have more time and expect to start building this thing soon! I have made lots of changes. Please take a look at the latest design pictures and let me know if you see any red flags. Some of the parts in the picture below are already purchased. So I'm in deep now and there will be no turning back! I have found this project to be WAY more difficult than I thought it would be. I need all the help I can get!

I think it looks great. The overkill on the structure will allow for a higher horsepower spindle in the future if necessary. You show 1 servo drive, you need 4 I think. One thing I would do before proceeding is to source your control panels, and do a rough back panel layout. You want to make sure you don't run out of space. 10" deep should do for the VFD panel, and maybe 8" for the other. Too deep just makes it difficult to work on. They're expensive new but you can find deals on eBay if you're lucky. Looking forward to seeing your beast running!

    Kevin,

Looks like I had 1 servo drive and 4 motherboards. That wouldn't work! Good idea on the control panels. If anyone out there has one for sale let me know. I'll start trolling eBay and see what I can find.

Am I the only one here with an opinion about this machine?

I'm waiting on production of all that structural tubing, the machine is only as good as its main support structure!
So far the concept looks solid!!

I'm going meet with a local machine building company next week. They may be able to supply the steel and cut all the parts. In the end I will have a table kit ready to assemble. I hope they can do it because my cutting tools are very limited.

The drawing looks good Allen. Are you going to change your enclosure mounting provisions to fit standard size enclosures? I would make room for at least 16" tall, or 20" if possible. Even then you will probably need two side by side for controls. Two 16X20X8's might be okay but even that tight makes things pretty difficult. Have you considered a free-standing enclosure at least for the non-VFD controls like this one?

That could leave you room for future changes like larger servo drives, etc. plus isolate your electronics from vibrations. It's aslo better for cooling. Just a thought..

I like the idea of putting most of the electrical components in a stand alone box. So I just purchased this 60" x 30" x 11" box on eBay.

    4'x8' RouteBot-capture222-jpg

Yea . . . it needs a little paint! However, it should have plenty of room for anything I may need in the future.

I have not met with the machine building company yet. The guy in charge was on vacation. So I hope to meet with him next week.

Still waiting for more quotes on steel. In the meantime I decided to mill the riser out of MDF to verify everything is correct. The aluminum is going to be expensive and I can't afford to overlook anything. The mill cut the MDF as expected and I plan on checking the alignment with the mating parts as soon as they come in. If all looks good I'll move forward and mill the 1" thick 6061 aluminum. It's nice to see a a physical part after looking at CAD for so long!

Just received the Misumi extrusions. They look good. I was surprised the big Y extrusion was so heavy. That thing is 72" long and weighs 82 lbs.

    4'x8' RouteBot-imag1338-jpg

The servos and 10:1 ratio gearboxes also came in. Lots of parts and still no steel for the table. Gonna have to step up the search and get some quotes.

The 3" x 3" x 3/16" steel box tube I'm using on my own build has a listed weight of 6.87 pounds per foot of length. That would be 82.44 pounds for a 144" length. I have one extra 12' piece that I'm tempted to weigh on bathroom scales just to see if the calculated weight is close to the measured weight. I too would have expected the extrusion to not weigh that much.

Default Welding table first . . . then the CNC table!

Steel and aluminum came in a few weeks ago. I decided to buy a little extra steel for a welding table. The CNC table will be my first ever welding project. Since I didn't have a welding table I thought it would be good practice to design and build one.

Now that the welding table is done, I feel a little better about moving forward with the CNC table. It's go time!!

All the steel is cut for the CNC router table. The next step is to drill the mounting holes in the 3" x 6" side beams to attach the 10' aluminum extrusions. However, I noticed quite a sag in the 3" x 6" beam sides. I knew I would need to shim the extrusions flat but this is not what I expected. Hopefully, shimming them will not be as hard as it looks.

Aw man, you went and picked my colors and beat me to it!! I have a gallon of that bright green stuff ready to go on my new frame, maybe this weekend. Gloss black is the trim color. I'm using the Jeep Wrangler mix.

I'm using TCB Global's Restoration Shop Sublime Green and Jet Black. It's a 4:1 ratio acrylic urethane. I always loved the old Mopar green! The Jeep green is probably close to the same color. You'll love it!

It has become a popular color. I have Stanley tape measures, Post-It notes, and see it everywhere now. Even my roadside trash bin is this kind of green and black.

    Default Extrusion mounting holes complete

The extrusion mounting holes are done. 3/4" socket clearance holes on one side and 3/8" holes on the other. I pre-drilled all the holes with a 1/8" bit. For the 3/4" holes I used a step drill. That was an easy way to drill the big holes in the 1/4" thick steel. 40 holes in each 3" x 6" . . . lots of drilling!
