Hard Top Jaw Solution Small Parts

I have a Kitagawa B-208 chuck on a Haas SL20 lathe. We occasionally use it to drill and tap 1/2" diameter shafts. Eventually I am going to put a collet chuck on it but until then, I've been trying to find a hard top jaw solution for the chuck. Currently we use soft jaws which I hate for this simple operation. All of the hard top jaws I can find don't close down small enough to hold the small shaft... Nowhere close.. Anyone have any ideas for me?

If I couldn't find the hard jaws to do the job, I would just build a set to do what is needed.
