I don't use mine in a production environment. I bought a cheap Intel NUC. Added a 120GB SSd disk and 8GB RAM. I connect via a STP CAT6 ehternet cable to a SmoothStepper.

Did you mount the NUC in your Controller cabinet? How is it working out for you so far?

No. Right now its mounted on the wall with the VESA 75 adapter that it comes with. Next to my wall-mounted monitor/keyboard stand. So far ok, no issues.

Back in 2015 I bought a pair of used Lenovo M92P mini computers to run the CNC. I upgraded the memory and added a Samsung 850 Pro SSD for maximum reliability (no moving parts as compared to a regular hard drive). I purchased two for redundancy to be able to be up and running quickly with a backup of the main’s hard drive(SSD). I actually chose that particular one because it had an i5-3470T processor (I’m also in IT) which were(are?) Intel’s low power (and heat) processors. The diminutive computer still has plenty of power to do anything I ask of it but doesn’t use much power. But computers are so fast now a days I’d focus on reliability which means a Lenovo or HP corporate type machine. Or the Intel NUC. Add a SSD, preferably an Intel or Samsung Pro as those are the most reliable and at least 8 GB of memory.

Intel NUC here also. I never buy a computer that has a lower power CPU than the latest, so 7i is the ticket. Stuff it with RAM and SSD and mount it to the back of the touch monitor with a VESA bracket.

This configuration requires the minimal amount of cabling. Either use a USB or Cat6 cable to the controller cabinet.

I just use a sub $400 laptop...it is a i5 processor with 8GB of RAM and standard spinning hard disk. Seems to do the job perfectly. I do all my design on another machine and just transfer gcode to this laptop over my network.

I'm a newbie, so please forgive my ignorance...on your laptop - do you have all the same software as on your desktop that you use to design or just the software that runs the g-code?
