Alignment of castings

Can anyone help me to let me know Castings are aligned on a CNC machine.

I think check program is created & operator is told to punch a drill bit on to casting program.

Need a discussion.

you should find a casting surface to machine out as the reference surface at first. then seting your program to match the machining surface as ZERO locaton. Hope it is make sense.
