I came from the engineering side (back when engineers did all the programming, before advanced CAD/CAM software).
The vast majority of programming jobs today are for machinists who do their own programming. Where to go really depends on where he is at. If he's already a machinist or machine operator then start at work. If this is a career change start at your technical college and get into a 2-year machine tool program. There's no short path, you REALLY need to know machining AND software AND computers / networks AND machine tool dynamics AND tooling AND fixturing AND how to get along with a bunch of dysfunctional egotistical know-it-alls (JUST KIDDING!) AND understand shop management AND Lean Manufacturing AND blueprint interpretation AND materials AND other processes.
dfescort98 it takes a good wife to work with or for your husband. People are amazed when they come to our shop and find out that my wife and I work together and have for 20 years. Most folks will tell you they couldnt do it.
jr. college or a vocational school training is a good start if its available.
My only choice was buying cadcam software and simply learning how to use it. Videos have made it easier to learn these days but a lot of it is still trial and error. Read everything you can find and ask questions. If someone rolls their eyes at you just remember you'll get the last laugh later.
Good luck to you,
Scott
