Depends on what year, but most with the standard PC2100 were an easy pop the old one out, pop the new one in. May have to remove a couple boards to get to it.

battery

hello
if your machine has the A2100 control then there are two boards with batteries.
PLEASE DONT CHANGE THE BATTERY ON THE BOARD ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE.
this is the realtime board and there is a change made to the bios. if the battery is taken out then this change is lost and the system will no longer recognise the realtime and the machine wont run. if the battery is changed then you will need to contact MAG for the bios update
regards

Thanks for the replies. This morning when I booted up the machine it had me go into the bios and reset the time and date. I noticed that the time was off by about 4 hours yeserday. I went through the BIOs and wrote down the data for the hard drive and other BIOS settings. Will changing the one battery correct this?

Thanks for the quick reply mallardfizz. I was wondering if you know how to find the number of hours a machine has, is there a screen that I can go too, to find this out, I know on Fanuc controllers there is a place to find this out but I'm not sure how to find this out on the A2100 controller. I am thinking of buying this Hawk 150, it is a 1996 or 98. I can get this machine for a good price, I have been running it for about 3 years, and it seen to run really well, I have replaced the turret controller about a year ago (Duplomatic turret) so there should be a few more good years of pruduction in this machine. I did notice that the fans in the drive controllers are starting to get noisy, are these fans fairly easy to change? Thanks again for any info you can provide.

Mike

I changed the battery this morning. Instead of writing every thing down I just used my digital camera and took pictures of each screen in the BIOS. Took more time to change the battery then it took to take the pictures. FYI to change this battery you have to take mother board and hard drive out of machine to get at battery. Now I don't have to set time and date on boot up.

Now I have to change the fans in the spindle drive controller. One fan was dead and the other was all gummed up that it would hardly turn.

Thanks too all for your help.

Mike

Just a quick question, what happens when the battery on the real time board dies? Wouldn't you need to get the BIOS from Cincinatti? Or is this a problem?

I must have been lucky,I changed all batteries on the boards only 3 months ago and had no problems booting back up at all.I was told by a computor guy if I were going to change them do each one as quick as possible. He seemed to think the chips in series with these batteries hold the memory for a small amount of time so if you changed them quickly there should be no problems.I had the boards out on the table to do this job.Regards Greg.

If you have a hard time finding the fans that fit let us know; we repair those VFS5 drives here in Dayton, OH....

Thanks for the offer Mike. I will keep you in mind for the future. I did find some fans, they were only 25mm thick instead of 38mm that the originals were.

These put out about 35 CFM's each, this is better then what was in there as one of the fans was dead and the other one was barely blowing at all. Machine has been running part time for the last 3 years. Do you repair axis motors as well? I might have a chance at buying a Falcon 200 of about the same vintage (1996-98) it has a problem with the X-axis motor not sure if it is the encoder or the actual X-axis motor. Drive seems OK from what I have been told. I might be able to pick up this machine for about $7,000 Canadian, it has a completely rebuilt turret (Duplomatic I think). Would this machine be worth looking at?
