HELP please guys, im trying to network my cincinnati a2100, its running win nt 3.51 and im trying to connect it to a pc running win XP. I bought a 3com network card and installed the driver that matched the name, (that was already in the machines memory). Im using a rj45 crossover cable, and ive used the win xp network creation wizard to create a network. I've had to manually input IP addresses to get them to say conected(which i was really excited about when i thought i was getting somewhere!). They both have the same workgroup name. However neither pc can see the other! Could it be a driver problem? or? I feel like im close but just missing a vital something? please advise! someone with networking experience might answer this easily for me. Many thanks MGC Bespoke Design |

someone with more network experience can help more I am sure but I think you may be missing 2 things: 1) you need to SHARE the harddrives on each machine - in xp click on my computer, rmc (right mouse click) on the harddrive, click on share&security, click on sharethisfolderonthenetwork. when you go back to my computer you will see a hand under the harddrive pix if it took. 2) you must turn on network discovery so computers can see you - in control panel, click on network connections icon, see if u can find network discovery on/off..... I dont remember how to find it. perhaps instead you could run the network setup wizard and it will set this stuff for you?

I think I may have done both of them suggestions, but I'd not heard of the network discovery, so I'll look into they next time I'm there, I used the wizard before tho. Keep the advice coming tho please. :-) Thanks so much Mgc bespoke design

1. assign IP addresses on the same IP network to the network adapters on the control and the PC. You can assign the IP address 172.16.0.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 to the control and the IP address 172.16.0.2 with a mask of 255.255.255.0 to the PC. Once this is complete, verify connectivity on the PC. Click start, run, cmd <enter>. This will open a command prompt (looks like a DOS window, black screen with a blinking cursor at the end of some text). Type ping 172.16.0.1 <enter> and if things are cooperating you should get 4 replies. If something is wrong, you will get 4 "request timed out". If that happens, check your work. Pointless proceeding until you can ping the control from the PC. If you can successfully ping the control from the PC, you have verified physical (network cards and cabling) and logical (network addressing) connectivity between the 2 machines. 2. create a folder on the PC, either in the C: drive or on the desktop, name it CNC, then right click on it and select "sharing and security". 2/3 of the way down click on "if you understand the..." then select enable sharing (not the network setup wizard option). Check "share this folder on the network" (at which point the name of the folder, CNC, should populate the share name field) and "allow network users to change my files" then click okay. 3. In Windows NT on the control, open file manager, then click the disk menu, then "connect network drive". In the dialog box that opens, select the drive letter you want to use (pick something like M or N) then in the path type \\172.16.0.2\CNC (assuming you assigned the IP addresses as I suggestd and shared the folder CNC as I suggested), put a check mark in the box "reconnect at logon" then click okay. The result SHOULD be that you now have a new drive letter listed in file manager. You can then copy or move files back and forth between the local drive(s) on the control and the shared folder on the PC. In other words, whatever files you see in the CNC folder when you are working on the PC is what you will see when you open the M: or N: (or whatever drive letter you chose) on the control. This is the magic of network redirection. It is more difficult to map a drive on the XP box to NT as NT does not have simple file sharing (which XP does). Without simple file sharing you would have to make sure that credentials (username and password) are identical on the computers participating which could become a problem with the control (I wouldn't go changing username or password on the control). If you are still having problems send me a PM, maybe we could solve it over the phone. Joe

I had the same problem. Was never able to see the Arrow (NT3.51) from the PC (Vista) or vice-versa. However, I have a QNAP network storage drive on the network and for whatever reason the Arrow has no problems seeing it. So I mapped that to drive letter N: on the arrow and just upload my gcode to the NAS and then copy it over using File manager from the operator station.
