    Default BDS4 overcurrent

    Hello,

The Z-axis drive in my '95 Arrow 750 is throwing an overcurrent alarm.

I have, in steps, disconnected the motor, replaced the two capacitors on the output and replaced the igbt module.

    Still it claims 'overcurrent'.

Is there anything else I should take a look at? Software reset possibilities?

    Any hints are much appreciated.

    Regards

I have found a simplified scheme tor the unit - could it be that the current limit pot is acting up?

    -Update-

Got in touch with MAG who were helpful enough to write me a measuring procedure - excellent service right there!
I went with it and found that the output transistor(s) are just fine.
I also interchanged the Z and Y drives to verify that the fault still occur at the current drive.

Next thing will be to check and change the rest of the capacitors on the controlboard - I still have no detailed scheme for the unit, so this will be a blast...

Apparently the cap situated at #318 right between the aluminum coolers in the middle of the main pcb were shot... Ordering in fresh new caps, and hopefully the fat lady will sing again.

If not ... Well... then I guess I'll have to sell a kidney and buy a refurbished one.

    Too exciting, this!

    Hi, Mike!

I have caps on order - they are somewhere in the snailmail atm.

Will ofcourse post pictures from the BDS4 resurrection party - or funeral...

I'll get in touch if things don't work out - thanks!

more suspect if faulty detection circuit are the caps in the circuit: 411 (1000pf), 367 (.1ufd). detection op am (comparator) is 369. Wierd scheme, but we watch the DC bus to detect overcurrent! one side of comparator held at dc bus + with 4700pf, other side of comparator input held at bus + withi .1ufd cap... timing circuit if bus dips too fast.

course it appears your 318 is in the middle of our 3 voltage regulators; we bring in raw +10, +/-18vdc and regulate on board down to +5 & +/-12vdc in this section... if those voltages are not regulated right, all bets of course are off...

let us know how you do!

I managed to remove the coolers without breaking the board. Win!

On the picture one can see there has been some pesky electrolyte seeping out from #318 and downwards to the +5v regulator with friends. One of 318's legs still present - it snapped of easily due to corrosion.

Looking forward to fit the new guys!

Fresh caps mounted - still overcurrent alarm on powerup.

Next thing will be to rule out the SMD-capacitors mike_Kilroy referred to; #411 and #367.

Got the smd-caps today and soldered them right in. 1nF on #411 and 100nF on #367. Guess what!?

    Yeah... overcurrent alarm

I've tried to trace the B+ to the comparator but it seems to be a resistor only here - marked '1002'.

    Component #415. Need a kidney?

Got rid of the overcurrent alarm!

A couple of resistors in the measuring circuitry were way off spec. All good now!

    Thanks a bunch for pointing things out, Mike Kilroy! Don't know how to thank you properly, but in the meantime please accept these dazzling flowers;
