'AVOID world-etrade on ebay' Help with new driver needed

    Hi all,

I bought a 3040B cnc from world-etrade in December. Not the most accurate machine but good enough for my purposes.

However, it failed last month. I suspect the power supply.

Tried to contact seller but no response at all, (1 year warranty hahahaha!). Seems a common problem.

Could anybody suggest a way forward. I'd by a new power supply if I thought it was necessary, but in truth I know little of these things. Any ideas?

    Regards,
    R

What exactly do you mean by "it failed"?

    What are the symptoms?

I don't have experience with that specific machine, but if you can provide more info maybe someone can help.

Do you have any electronic test equipment (such as a basic digital multimeter) and experience using it (or do you have a nearby friend with equipment and experience)? Are you using a PC and Mach3 or something else?

A power supply is usually an easy thing to check, if you have to replace it and it is a switching type, consider a linear supply, it initially may cost a couple of $$ more, but not only more reliable, easy to fix.

    Hi,

When I switch the unit on, the power light is illuminated but there is no fan spinning and no power to the motors. I'll get a multimeter later today and will check for power from the power supply and report back. The switch itself is working because i disconnected a spade from it there was a small spark when reconnecting.

I have had two power supplies go on my SyilX3 which they replaced, the supplies were rated at 48v but as the drivers are 48v not much room for spikes I gave up and bought two 60v supplies and wired then in parallel to spred the load and have had no problems for over a year now.
As many posts to this site bear out a lot of Chinese electrics are suspect and as they are not round the corner when things go wrong you'r up the swanny.

Sorry to hear about your problem Mike. Bearing in mind the cost, I guess I was never expecting miracles from this machine, overall I am pleased with it though. I 'm commited to spend a little extra cash if thats what'll make it work AND be reliable. Disappointed with the seller's support though.

Tested the supply this afternoon (GMT+0). Nothing coming from the power supply at all. I see a little fuse under the cover but can't get to it at present. From a simple inspection through the case it looks OK. Soon as I figure out how to get the perforated case off, I'll take a closer look and see if anything else noticably damaged. Nothing to lose at this stage.

Overall the electronic construction seems very poor. Wouldn't want to be a Chinese astronaut!

Anybody know of a U.K. company providing reasonably priced power supplies?

    Cheers,
    Richard

The R.O.C. supplies I have seen usually have a fuse in the AC input line only.
Have you though about putting a simple linear supply together yourself? only 3 basic components!.

    Success,

Managed to 'bend' the case off. Checked the fuse which had blown. Replaced it, but still no luck. Then I noticed that one of the resistor leads on the track side of the board seemed very long. I suspected that it might have somehow touched the case so I cut it off, replaced the fuse wire again and now its working.

Thanks to all contributors for your help,
    Richard
