    Spindle stopped turning

    Wondering if anyone can help?

I have a Camwood 408 (water cooled, air change tool) and was cutting out a pattern today and the tool stopped spinning. Now that I think of it I'm not sure if the spindle stopped or the tool just stopped spinning.

With the tool not spinning I pulled wood off the table and broke a clamp.

Does anyone know if heat could have loosened the collet nut causing the tool to bind up in the wood?

It seemed to be running hot earlier today so I turned up the feed rate from 60 IPM to 80 IPM and that seemed to alleviate the smoke.

    Anyone have any ideas?

It looks like the flutes were just getting filled with dust and the cutting edge was no longer biting into the wood. This caused the tool to push the wood instead of cutting through it.

I switched to a tool with a deeper spiral profile, 1/4" diameter and 2 flutes instead of three. The chips were bigger and the heat dissipation was much better. In the end a piece got stuck to the bit as it was lifting out causing the bit to break in the rapid to the next piece.

    Live and learn.

    Hi Woodmizer:
Read your stories and it seems that you have found some solutions. you'd better push the emergency button when the spindle stops spinning, not pulled the wood out, it is dangrous to do that.
I think it is because the spindle is overload, so it stops to work. Not the tools. Normally it makes a noise before stopping. As you know it always shortens the using life time of the spindle.
For a spindle, there are influences such as: feedrate, difference of materials and cutting depth, even the tools. if it is powerful enough, it is ok, otherwise what happened to you happens.
i dont think you can change the spindle or your materials, so try to lower down the feedrate or cutting depth of each time.
For the tools, i think two flue one is better 3 flue one. if the wood smooks, it shortens the life time of the tool for sure.
    Regards
    Alan
