    Home brew refractory

How long will the home brew refractories last or start to fail? I've fired my new foundry several times and I'm not seeing anything failing. Just a few cracks in the lid where the exit hole is, but it looks sound.

What mix did you end up using? I've heard of guys going several melts with a portland based refractory, as long as they only melt Aluminum. The temptation do melt brass or Iron is just too great for some and then they ruin their lining.

    I just melt aluminum.

    The mix
    2 parts bentonite
    2 parts silica sand
    1 1/2 parts perlite
    1 1/2 parts portland cement
    1 1/2 parts firerock

Just melted a couple of old carbs tonight and the mix still not showing any signs of failing.
