deskcnc and the fonts

trying to make a sign, i get the outline of the font in deskcnc; but i can not seem to declare it as an island or even a boundry. after i do either step and go to pocket command, it still gives me a cut pattern right thru the letters. do i have somthing messed up in the deskcnc program? Any help would be appreaciated, Thanks Brady
