Need help with this setup....

I would like to know if I'm doing something wrong, because when I test me step motor the rpm is almost nill.

The setup is as follows:

4 x Nema 23 Stepper Motor (57BYGH115-003)

Step Angle: 1.8
Voltage: 6.3VDC
Current: 3A
Number of Leading wires: 4
Holding Torque: 425 oz-in

4 x Step Motor Driver DQ542MA

Driving: 2 phase, 4 phase motor
Current: 4.2A
Micro steps: 128

http://www.wantmotor.com/ProductsView.a ... =75&sid=82

2 x Power Supply 350W, 48VDC (S-350-48)

http://www.wantmotor.com/ProductsView.a ... =75&sid=90

The connections are as follows:

Step Motor to Driver:

Black Wire: A+
Green Wire: A-
Red Wire: B+
Blue Wire: B-

Driver to Power supply DC+ To DC+, DC- to DC-

Driver to Planet-CNC 4 USB 4 Axis

Driver has a jumper between DIR- and PUL-

DIR- (PUL-) to GND on USB Board
DIR+ (+5V) to S1 on USB Board
PUL+ (+5V) to D1 on USB Board

Are you certain that's how you've got it wired?

I would hook it up as:

DIR+ to D1 on USB board

and

PUL+ to S1 on USB board

(my interpretation is that S1 is a Step output, while PUL+ is a Step input, and D1 is a Direction output while DIR+ is a Direction input).

Also, do you have a load connected to the stepper motor? It does not look like you do, judging from the photograph.

128 microsteps is an extremely high value - is that the max value that the driver is capable of handling, or is that the setting that you are using? If you are using that setting it will take 25,600 pulses for a single revolution. Your computer might only be putting out 25,000 pulses per second, which would give you 1 revolution per second (or 60 rpm). Have you tried it with a smaller microstep setting, for example 1/8 microstepping?

Are you running your motor power supplies in series to get 96 volts?

I'm running the power supply in parallel mode because once I get over 48volts the step driver stops working and the red light comes on.

Will try switching the wires like you say.

thanks

Hi guys
just stubbled on this thread , when searching google about the exact Motors used here, my question is when i bought this kit he only sent me a 24V 17A power supply, now i havnt gotten to the test or install of the motors / electrics yet but what would a more powerful power supply do for me? I have exact same kit as Navop. Also thinking of getting the Gecko G540 to run these motors would 24V work for me or do i need bigger?
Thanks
Rgds
Riche..

Both that driver and the G540 are rated to handle up to 50 volts. The motor should have better torque at high speeds if you use 48 volts instead of 24 volts.

IIRC The rpms will increase with higher voltage. If you aren't maxing out the kernel speed. Not sure if you are running microstepping that high.
