Newbie and looking for DIY suppliers

Hello,

I am in the Red Deer Alberta area and going to start building a 4’x 8’ bed for a cnc router for wood, plexi and possible aluminum setup. I am in the process of locating parts for this project. Can someone point me to a Canadian supplier for the electronics & mechanical items needed? I would not mind a kit either.

Here is a video of a 400watt system running, He has posted other video's as well if you want to see more, AC servo action, the machine is smaller than what you want to build, but this will give you a idea how well the system runs

Thanks. I will watch them all. So, is a 400w system ok for this size, or do I need to go larger?

I could probably get by with a 4x4 bed, but I have the room and thought that why not have the capability. I will probably only be using a 4x4 area most of the time for signs and other items.

What type of drive and rail system would you recommend?

There are a ton of different ways to go about it, best bet is to spend some serious time scouring this site and the rest of the net for ideas.

I am currently gathering supplies to build a "joe's Hybrid" 4x4 right now. It costs $100 for the plans and access to his forum, but for that price you get great support from joe and the other forum members. I know a lot of guys are building the "joe's Hybrid in a 4x8 size and having good luck with MDF, plastic and some minor aluminum.

For a 4x8 machine, I think a flying gantry using a rack & pinion drive would be the best way to go.

Also, in Alberta, Fastenal has a lot of stuff in stock and they can order in even more than is shown in their catalog. Aluminum extrusion, acme screw etc.etc.etc. And, for plastics, Johnston plastics has a shop in Edmonton and is about the cheapest and best to deal with place I've found for HDPE and other plastics.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering what plan to follow. There are quite a few out there. I have the MechMate plans that I was looking at.

I was looking at all the mdf plans, but was thinking of using some resources and making from aluminum and metal. But mdf will be more reasonable and less costly if I make errors.

I will look at the joes Hybrid also, thanks. There are so many plans and info out there. That is why I am trying to get replies like your self, because you have done a lot of researching also. It helps and hopefully I will be able to help others in the future.
