Hi, I've been registered for a little while, lurking and reading. Figured I'd say hello. I am currently building a tabletop cnc based off a design on instructables. Cutting parts for the machine is almost done and the controller(hobbycnc) is built, just waiting on the transformer to arrive to test the motors, also from hobbycnc. Got the pro kit as it seemed a better deal. My other interests are electronics, scale r/c electric flying, tinkering with operating systems and making them work on hardware they shouldn't (think hackintosh and linux on consoles), guitar, cooking and reading. Just wanted to chime in an say hi and thanks to all for the great ideas and tips I've been reading here. Cheers, -Colin Hamilton, ON. |

| Hi Colin, welcome to the Zone! I am up in Guelph, and am building a tabletop machine. Bit by bit, mostly with scrounged components. This forum is terrific, and there is a lot of great advice here for the taking. Cheers! Paul Rowntree |

| I too have been on here for quite some time just looking in and thought I'd say hello from Bracebridge, On. I built a DIY 24x48 CNC using Drawings and hardware from buildyourcnc.com and it works great. Thinking of building the newer 48x96 Chain and Sprocket unit from the same site. Patrick Hood-Daniel has a great site and is very resourceful. Anyway, if I can help, let me know. Al

| Hi Al! My build uses chains on X and Y, based on what I saw on Patrick's site. #25 chain is easy to work with, but it can be hard to find small components etc. He may be selling the smaller idlers for this chain now. All backlash has to be eliminated unless there is some gear ratio hardware installed. With a 9 tooth sprocket on #25 chain, a 10-microstep controller and 200 step motors, 1 microstep = 0.001" best case scenario for my system. Every 'soft' coupler that I tried would give at least 0.010" backlash. Rubber hose couplers need not apply! I hope to receive my power supply this week, and then make some chips. I will keep you posted! |
