Better 50 pin cables
I'm getting ready to install all the I/O hardware on my next refit. I'm using an Adlink 7296 Data Acquisition : PCI-7296/7248/7224 96/48/24-CH Opto-22 Compatible Digital I/O PCI Cards
and four PB24G4 Opto 22 boards.
I used flat ribbon cables between these devices on my last refit and its an awful kludge. The four cables leave from inside the computer on the card with no way to secure to the computer and flat cables are just a mess.
Anyone know of a source for round cables with 50 pin headers. or is there a better idea out there? many Camsoft installs use this setup.

AFAIK There is no quick way to transfer from 50pin IDC to round cable.
But there are flat ribbon cable clips, in N.A. Panduit and Thomas & Betts sell them.

You can also buy jacketed and shielded ribbon, but probably pricey, I picked up a spool on ebay once, cheap.

Search Allied Electronics for PN 608-2905 Spectra-Strip #159-2801-050
Use this on most retrofits with the PCI 7224, PCI 7248 and PCI 7296. Open the cable flat at both ends for connectors. Plus it's shielded!

That's a vast improvement! I've never tried to make up my own cable. Is it any big deal? What all to I need to get for cable ends?Originally Posted by n174k

Normally the IDC header ends are a simple job, They can be obtained from DigiKey, not far from you in ND. You can get keyed or unkeyed, the plain ones don't have the raised piece in the centre.
A clean vise is usually all you need and line the connector up square and wind the vise in until the clamp side latches to the bottom side.
I use sharp scissors to cut the cable and if you need to trim afterwards a box cutter with a new blade works good.

Thanks guys. Looks like i got 50 pin cable for sale. I'll never use up the 100' I just ordered.

Insert the flat cable between the cap and the pins and insert in a vise to keep parallel while clamping.

Follow up. These cables worked out real neat. I also found some short pre made SCSI cables to put in the PC for only $6

Tied these to the back of of the 'puter and now you can quickly swap out if the need arrises.
