CamBam has a new plugin specially for doing "Trochoidal milling". I want to give it a try also I felt that it was time to prove that this type of milling is faster and easier on the cutters so I used a broken end mill, it has no tip it lost the flute on the first 10mm of it tip.

In short I took a endmill out of the bin and cut a 200mm wide 16mm thick steel plate yes steel.
I think the video proves the point and also shows CamBam can make the grade. I have a photo of the cutter if you guys want to see it.
    enjoy.

I can't find the Trochoidal milling plug in on the cambam website. What is it called? If it works, I'll buy cambam just for that feature.

If you down load the CAD Extras Plugin its in there as part of it. ANdy is improving it all the time. Because there is no upgrade charge its always getting better.

Its CadExtra/Draw/Trochoidal parth draw. What it does is follow a line at the width you set. Save heaps of cutters and time.
Also see this link were I have used it to do jobs.
My Interiation of a possiable way to do Trochoidal milling.

Good luck its a great program, any help you need just ask.

Awesome. Thanks for the help. I've got it working, and I'm going to try it out on a 1.5" deep slot that I've been doing conventionally 0.15" at a time up until now. I look forward to seeing how this method works.

I finally got to try the Trochoidal technique yesterday. It worked great. I was making 3/8" DOC slots with a 1/4" endmill with no problems at all. Previously, I'd have taken a 0.15" DOC. My surface finish was not as good as a standard profiling cut, but that is more than made up for by the speed up in milling time.

I'll have to purchase CAMBAM now....

Hi Jim great to here it worked out for you. You need to learn how to use a spiral cut as well it will kick ass.
See you on the CAMBAM forum.

Thats great, to think I use to cut 2mm max depth per path and you are taking bigger bits per pass. Love the way the cutter is bitting in.
    Keep up the great work.

Is there any way to increase the feed while cutting air? Seems like that is the only downfall of this technique.

My experiance is that the feed while cutting air is at rapid feed rate, if that is the case and your air speed is slow you may have to adjust the Acceleration rate in the motor tuning on the Mach-3. I know that was a issue for me, also make sure your settings are not set at "Exact stop" in the Mop in CamBam.

    Hope that helps.
