Old School Calibration

Details:
Mech Eng Class on CNC
Haas TM-1
Assignment - Use dial indicator w/magnetic base (I am using small endmill holder to hold shaft with adjustable arm and .0005 dial indicator) and confirm calibration(tram)

I'm supposed to reproduce an inspection performed by the Haas Instalation Technician. But the figures provided are not making sense.
I don't have a way to scan this right now. If you are interrested, I will get that done Wednesday.

If you are familiar with the document, Fig6 and 6a are not clear to me.
parrallel to X and parrallel to Y are not clear. Any insight?

Looks like a cylindrical square on the bed and travel in the z axis 10" to measure deviation.

I use to do machine set up and training. Email me the forms (scan them whatever you have to do. Usually they use a precision square or a cylinder square to check the z axis perp to the table. This will also find chuck holes in the vertical rails. Better test is to use a ballbar in several locations on the table. They will tell you a whole lot in a little time with out ripping covers off. I do this on the weekends. I have installed over 40 machines. I have used ballbars and lasers to calibrate machines.

Interested party

I'm newbie here who a long time ago was involved in calibration albeit not of the equipment being discussed here. I'm also a new mini mill owner who is in the process of tramming his mill. I am using a method that is in principle about the same as used by Jetski, below. I am still in the learning mode and I'm therefore very much interested to see where this thread leeds to. Where can one obtain the Haas TMs you are referring to. I also have a question kenberra. Are you using a dial indicator or a test indicator,

RE: Interested Party

Please ignore my question on where to get the HAAS TM-1 procedure. I did some follow up research and found, to my embarrassment that TM-1 is model number, not a tech manual; old habbits die hard.

Talking indicator

The best would be a .0001 indicator but if all you have is a .001 measure 10 time further. If a .0001 is out .0001 in one inch than a .001 would be out .001 in 10 inches. The .001 indicator will not pick up small divots in the rails, and may be harder to tweek in the backlash but it can be done with acceptable results. Email me direct if I can be any help.
