I've got a 3 axis calibration machine with 1 translation axis and 2 rotational axes. Currently it is controlled using LabView but I'm converting it to CNC because LabView is temperamental.

This is the first time I have done this and I'm looking for suggestions and ideas on how to proceed.

Currently the stand uses DC motors geared down and has encoders for feedback. There is lots of backlash, about 30 encoder counts out of a revolution of 2000. I'm thinking of swapping them for stepper motors because I believe the backlash could cause problems.

I'm thinking of purchasing a controller board and drivers from Planet-CNC. Their software seems easier to set up than Mach 3. The board also looks modern and well made.

Anybody have any suggestions for a first time build?
