    Motorcycle cylinder wet sleeve intall question

    I have installed quit a few sleeves into single cylinder motorcycle cylinders but this is the first wet sleeve. The motorcycle is a Kawasaki KLR 650 . The sleeve has 2 orings at the bottom of it to seal the water jacket .

    Normaly I heat the cylinder up to about 450 - 500 degrees and drop the new sleeve in . But with the orings how should this be done without cooking them ??? Lube ???? Or no heat and just press it in ?

    Have any of you done this before ?

    Well after calling around a little this is the best answer I have gotten . Heat the cylinder to 200 degrees ( any hotter and it will melt the o-rings) Lube the orings with dish soap and drop in the sleeve .

    Not familiar with motorcycle wet sleeves but I would have thought the sleeve (without O rings) would be a slip fit.

    How hot does it get when the engine runs? Surely the o-rings can take up a slight interference even when cold, just lube with something compatible with coolant and o-ring.
    Red to red and black to black, or it's ashes to ashes and dust to dust.

    Hi the best way to do this is fit the sleeve with no heat,most wet sleeves on motorcycles require no heating at all.The way i fit these is grease the 2 o'rings at the bottom,make sure everything is clean especially the shoulder the sleeve sits on and press the sleeve slowly because some times the o'rings try to drop out of the grooves,so you may need to feed them back in with a scriber as you push the sleeve in the full way.However if the sleeve has the right chamfer at the bottom, good old gease should be just fine.Best of luck Greg.

    Thanks for the replys. I did a light heating to approx 200 degrees . Lubed the orings with some white litium grease , and it when in realy smooth . The bike is together and running great ! I did some measuring beforehand , it had a press fit of .001"
