need guidance on plans

hi guys,
i want to build an engine and i do not know what plans to look for. i am searching a lot in internet and found many plans but i do not know witch is good or not.
can someone with knowledge please let me know where to look for decent working plans?

You might get more help if you could narrow down what type of engine you are interested in building.

Steam or Gasoline?
Single cylinder or multi?
2, 4, 6, 8 cylinder
Automotive or aeromotive?

There are so many options out there I really don't know which way to point you.

thanks for the reply.
i have to tell you that your thread ispired me to build my own engine .unfortunately i am not a pro like you. i come from rc model planes but i am interesting in ic engines in general.
with short glance i think aero radials are easier in constraction. so i want to know witch one i should look for.parhaps a 9 cyl?but witch builder?
please note that i do not plan to fly with this engine any model probably .

did you finished the drawings of your engine?good luck

Yes I have finished my plans and many have purchased them.


One of the finest sets is the Hodgson family. Not a build for the beginner but many have built the engine and many have succeded. I have the set and they are absolutely first class.

If you do not know a lot about building engines, start with a simple single cylinder. There will be enough there to keep you busy and hone your skills a little better and also, it might just work first time. Steam is more forgiving with regards to "tolerance" and it will run on compressed air. However there is more involved with boiler and burners.
Kids at a local high school here have been taught (in classes no more than 6) to build a 30cc fourstroke water cooled engine. As a starter they build with just a poppet valve for the exhaust and if they get time, then they make up an inlet cam as well. Ignition is an old car coil and points. Four stroke easier than 2 stroke......yes I know there are no valves as such and no cams and gearing, but to get a piston sealing well enough for a 2 stroke can be involved. Valves on a four stroke take an effort as well but just remember to cut valve seat and valves without moving the topslide angle on the lathe. Works for me.
