Bridgeport clone quill removal

Does anybody have instructions on how to remove the Quill assembly from a bridgeport or bridgeport clone head. I have a Siber Hegner RB1 with a BP style variable speed head that i need to take the quill out of to replace the bearings but have never tackled something like this before.

Could not be easier - Remove the pinion gear, remove the two screws on top of the qull that keep the chip guard in place, and pull the quill out the bottom....

Do you have any pictures of these parts. I don't know what the chip gaurd or pinion gear are or look like or where to find them. Thank you for your quick response all help is greatly apprecieated.

The pinion is attached to the downfeed handle. Remove the cover on the left side of the head, and remove the circlip from the gearshaft in there. Remove the two bolts on the right-side cover under the handle (be-careful, the cover is spring-loaded, and will unwind when you remove the bolts) then pull the shaft out, and the pinion will come with it. Remove the pulley housing from the top of the head, push the quill all the way up, and remove the two screws up on the top of the quill, then remove the sheet metal shield around the quill. Now just pull the quill out the bottom. It's really quite simple.

It's even simpler to remove the spindle from the quill, leaving the quill in place.

Ray L.

Thanks Ray!

I was just yesterday helping a friend repair one of his BP's that had the quill drive pinion split laterally right along its keyway. The quill is very hard to move up/down so we suspect a piece of crap found its way in there.

We got it all ready to come out but the quill stops firmly at the bottom of its travel for unknown reasons. At least they were unknown until you posted the procedure! We didn't know about that chip guard.

Unfortunately, it does not sound that simple to remove the belt drive to get at that chip guard. I believe there are a lot of parts to remove before you can get at it.

Why remove the quill to replace the bearings? If it indeed is a clone the spindle comes out without removing the quill. Lower the quill an inch and see if there is a set screw in the back side that keeps the quill nut on the bottom from coming loose. Then unscrew the quill nut and tap out the spindle from the top.

No, removing the belt drive requires nothing more than undoing the three bolts that hold the whole belt drive/motor assembly to the head, and lifting the whole thing off. It takes about 3 minutes. Nothing else needs to be removed.

But, again, if you're only working on the spindle, you can remove the spindle alone, without removing *anything* else. Just remove the set screw from the back of the quill, near the bottom, use a pin-wrench to un-screw the cap from the bottom of the quill, and the spindle and bearings come right out the bottom.

Ray L.

Thanks again Ray for your help. Sounds easier than I thought. Its a friends machine, he had the quill drive pinion split lengthwise right along the keyway. The quill is also binding in its bore so that has to be explored to fine the cause which is the reason for the quill removal. Although the pinion seems to be whole, it would only take a tiny chip in the quill bore to cause the binding. I have pulled spindles before and agree that is extremely easy, a good example of quality engineering.
