George, i'll try to replace the board. I'll see what EMI says about replacing it. What you say about repairing it was just what i was thinking. Just to tell you there is alot of dust on the boards. You know what is in the dust/air in a machine shop, metals from sanding & cutting. I was wondering about the idea that this conductive dust is caulsing the board to go crazy? Do you recomend a way to clean the boards?
With your help i THINK i have pin pointed the problem and i've learned VERY much from you! This has given me a NEW interest in this area of machine electronics.
I'll look on the NET for a board also, but i have not had much luck finding things on the NET over the last few years. I find everything BUT what i'm looking for!
Much thanks Mike

We clean circuit boards at work with mild dish soap and water. Use a paint brush to gently clean it in the sink like you might the dishes. Let dry thouroghly (a day at least) before trying again. This is not a joke. We do it all the time.

Don't dunk boards with relays on it. Use less water and avoid getting water insde the relays but if it's dead anyways it can't make it much worse. Use a bit of contact cleaner on any pots that may be on the board.

In the back of the old BOSS manuals was a section on using soap and water to clean boards! But with a warning. If it has pots (variable resistors) or relays, use a freon based spay on in a can board cleaner. I have had a problem with dirt on a board. I remember a specific case on a BOSS 5 that was cutting EDM carbide electrodes for turbine compressor blade segments. A human hair was on a board and the graphite was adhearing to it. It was mispositioning. Cleaning the board fixed it.

I believe EMI is selling a replacement for this axis drive board as it is no longer a production item. I have not yet had the opportunity to try one of these. Keep me posted.

The 1988 v2XT must be the SX version which requires a floppy disk to get the machine going. Lets see if I can attach a self extracting Zip file.
It is an auacceptable file type as it has a .exe extension.

Visit the V2XT users group as I have uploaded a file there for the SX type and another for the BMDC type.

turn the machine on and watch the floppy. It has a little light on it. In a short time it should light up for a few seconds. If it does, it means the logic power supply and motherboard are good. If not, I would look at those first. The FMDC has nothing to do with the fact that there is no video. But the Western Digital mother board has on board video, not a separate video card. The FMDC has 8 LEDs across the top. If they do not light up, it may also indicate a bad logic power supply.

The floppy drive flashes at the moment I turn on power but does not light up even for a full second. the good news is all eight LEDs are lit on the FMDC. Thanks again

Sounds like a bad mother board. Check all the connections, and press down all socketed ICs. If you have a speaker, attach it to the speaker etrminals. If it beeps, count them, it is an error message. I will try and attach what beeps mean.

Damm, it is 577 MB. The limit is 500MB. I have to rescan this at the office at a lower resolution. Tell me the beeps and I will tell you what it means. If there are no beeps, get some holy water or call a priest and administer last rites to the mother board. There is the ouside chance that the logic power supply is out of spec. The LEDs would still light up.

Hi Mike,

Did you ever find the disk for the V2XT? If not I may be able to help.
