I just bought a older Bridgeport mill "J" head w/ v belt and the pully won't turn. I got a book and took off the top of the head. It says to take out the top 2 screws (I did) and take out the 2 side screws pins these I can't get out ... are they screws or pins ??? I think the brake is somehow stuck and nothing moves. |

pulley. I think the brake band expands to the inside of the pulley. The brake handle can be twisted in either direction to brake, it springs back to the center to release. You can swing the handle up to lock the brake on. Second, the direct drive clutch and backgear can both be engaged at the same time on the 1J head. There is a small lever on the right side of the main housing toward the back to engage the back gear. There is a ring that acts as a cam to raise the driven pulley assembly to disengage the direct drive clutch. If both are engaged at the same time, it locks the spindle. I'll bet one of these is why the spindle won't turn. Jon |

| I've taken the top off the mach. The dirven pully will not turn. The brake handle moves. If I hit the brake handle with a hammer (softly) I can turn the driven pully about 1/2 turn ... then it sticks again. I need to get to the under side of the pully/brake thing. I can't seem to get the pins/screws out. I will try and see if they will pull out instead of unscrew. I'll let you know |

| These are pretty good instructions for doing the whole head. http://home.comcast.net/~tom.jelly/j...%20rebuild.htm Good luck. The pins ARE threaded. |

Oh! Well, not much you can do but snap them off, and drill them out. They've gotta come out. I would expect if you just broke them off, they'd break off flush, since there's a step at that point. You should then be able to easily drill the broken pieces out on the bench. Regards, Ray L. |
