BP series 1 head noisy... Options Please

To all that can help....

I have finely applied power to the head on my BP series 1. And like so many other things in this project supprise . It is quite noisey. So now I am looking for options.

Rework the Vari drive. And not use it much as Most speed changes will be done with the Teco VFD.

Remove the Vari drive and put in pulleys. Using my TeCo VFD for the speed control.

Is there another option I have not thought of?

What is the complexity of either project.

Are kits available for either project?

Which is more cost effective.

Much thanks to the people here that ahve helped me.......

Have you determined where the noise is coming from? There are several places noises *can* come from in a BP head, and it can be hard to tell them apart sometimes. You shouldn't be considering surgery before understanding what the real problem is.

Ray,

So how does one tell. I do know that if I drop the speed down to about 2000 it gets quieter and smoother. If I then use the VFD to raise the speed it is not to bad. Most of the thunks from the first startup have now gone away. But It still sounds raspy and loud at the higher RPM's. This head has not been turned on in about 4-6 years.

Well I have been talking to H&W machinery and I have pulled the motor and removed the belt. Near as I can tell the belt is the problem. New belt on the way.....

Noisy Shiv assembly??

With the spindle running, lightly apply the spindle brake. If the noise gets louder, chances are that the shiv needs rebuilt/replaced. Another way to tell if it's the shiv, is to crank it to the lowest speed. As your cranking, does the noise get louder as you slow the spindle down? Just a thought! Good luck.

Put in a top end rebuild kit with new bearings etc. Runs a little quieter and smoother. But it still rattles. when you move the shift lever to engauge high high speed more the rattle reduces a great deal. Looks like I need a new castle gear...

I am not familiar with your mill, so this might not apply. If you have variable speed pulleys, check and make sure the key in the pulley (not motor shaft) is not sheared or mangled somehow. The bridgeports we have use nylon keys, that will shear durring a forward to reverse manuver.
