Hello everyone, I am finally getting back to my mill. I bought Hillbillies BOB and before I install it I am making sure everything works (spindle xyz axis) wich seem's to be logical right? Anyway my spindle will not turn on and I have traced the problem to diode 38 I have continuity in both directions. I do not know much about diodes so how do I replace it (values, size, voltage?) Also which diode do you recommend for the transistors on the Y axis drive? Also the spindle stop butto on my machine isdamagd, does anyone know if this switch is normaly open or closed? P.S. I am working on a 1980 vintage Bridgeport series one rigid head Scott Last edited by batterzazu; 03-21-2009 at 09:36 AM. |

Diodes usually have a line code on them similar to resistors. They have wattage ratings also. If you are capable of removing the diode from the board check out an electronics catalog and look for one with the same code on it. Be really careful in the removal. Too much heat can quickly destroy related nearby electronic components. If you are getting the same readings by reversing your meter probes, check to see if there is something shorting out the diode on the opposite side of the circuit board before you go and try to remove it from the board. THe spindle sop switch on your controller panel is often referred to as the E-stop button. This switch is normally closed during regular operation. WHen you press down on it, the circuits are broken (opened) which quickly turns off the spindle and or servos to prevent damage to the machine and or operator! What is the nature of the damage to the switch. Is is a cosmetic chip out of the button or has the switch been dislodged from the controller panel surface, is it a contact problem??? Each of these has a different consequence. Some more serious than others? Can't realy tell by your description. Hope this is some help. |

| Thank you for your help, the spindle stop button is to the left of the E-Stop switch. under the brake on off switch, it seems to be a momentary switch because when I push in on it it springs back. Just an afterthought here but I never mentioned that I am working on a Bridgeport Series 1. |

| The spindle start switch if on a boss3 through 6 is a 5 position device (if I remember correctly) with center off. First position is a ON position for spindle forward or reverse. The next position to either side is spring loaded and is the start position. Returning to center turns the spindle off. No oil in the way oil reservoir will not allow spindle start. There is also a overload for the spindle that will prevent it from running. George

| Hi George, you described the start switch perfectly, no memory problem there at all. The switch I need help with is the spindle off switch directly on the brake auto or off switch. Also do you know what values of a diode I need for the y axis transistors on the drive as well as D38 on CR5? Thank you Scott |

Sorry Guys! I'm red faced on that one. Don't know why I thought there was a rating code on the diodes too. Must have been up too late that night. Will double check next time before I respond! |
