Need Help!- Bridgeport 2J variable speed pulley

After replaceing bushings on variable speed pulley, new belts, and a couple of bearings in the head I got the noise from the head to go away but now I have a grinding noise while spinning the spindle in neutral and a hard time shifting from low to high. Any suggestions ???

Seems to me, assuming the grinding and difficult shifting are related, you've most likely got the dog clutch mis-adjusted, so it's not releasing completely. Could also be the backgear engage lever is not moving far enough, leaving the backgear idler dragging on the big gear when it should be disengaged.

On the dog clutch, just disengage it, and look to see that the dogs completely clear each other, and that you can turn the spindle without the pulley turning. Similarly, with the backgear disengaged, you should be able to turn the pulley without the spindle turning. There should be no noise in either case.

You should also spin up the motor with both the dog clutch and the backgear disengaged, and see if the noise is still there.

Ray,

Had to pull the top back off and found pinion that engaged the back gear was not seated all the way. Should have paid more attention while assembling first time, but I am glad it was something simple.
