Well, i'm going to give my experiences here. I had an r8 spindle in my j head. I've used it alot with an impact style drawbar. It worked reasonable good, wore out a drawbar in about a year. Then i found an nmtb30 spindle on ebay that had the hole for the drawbar. A light bulb went off in my head. I bought it an made a hardened steel drawbar much like a true cnc with three balls as the "gripper". I use regular bt30 tooling with regular 45* pullstuds. The drawbar has about 450-500lbs of pull using bellville washers I made a pancake cylinder with about 1200lbs of force at 100psi to release the tool. It works fantastic! It's nice to push a button and the tool drops out INSTANTLY. Now if i could only get some spindle orientation working and maybe some rigid tap too.lol

Has anyone here tried the Royal style QC tooling system? If so how does it compare to Tormach? I know it's strictly manual tool changing but it may offer a simple solution without having to add a power drawbar. The con's seem pricing and light duty use? Any other sistems like that available out there???

| No, it is'nt. It is quick change because you preset the depth on the end mills. This is also somthing you have to do with ATC, but you have to do more as well with regard to coding. Some of my progams need three tools. They are all set at the same height. When a tool change comes, I loosen the drawbar with an imact and it drops out. I slip the other in and tighten with the impact. Then I hit cycle start. Typing this took ten times longer than a tool change. It really is a matter of seconds and very few at that.

I'm leaning towards the Tormach tooling. The pricing seems right for what I do. Now if I end up using it with a power drawbar, is there a way to prevent their R-8 collet from dropping out when losened? I just want the collet to release the tool holder.

Try this. No air required. Don't have to climb up on top of the head of the machine. Here is the web site. http://www.royalprod.com/product.cfm?catID=11

DJPLAST, that was the system I was originally looking at. For me it's a bit pricey, but if you count on not having to make or buy a power drawbar then it might get a bit more affordable. I haven't seen any sales on this item yet... It would be nice to get some feedback from people who have used it. fast89, do you have a drawing of what you made? I have a hard time picturing the ball clamp mechanism inside the spindle. thanks ot
