BP Series 1, was BOSS 5, need help tracking down BEARING and BELT replacement

Hey All,

I need som ehelp tracking down a supplier for a replacement of the TOP BEARING on the QUILL and the BELT.

Why? Well, last school year, we noticed the mahcine ran kind of rough occationally.SOme days when we start it up, the spindle will only run for 5 - 10 seconds, then it will turn off. After 3-4 tried the spindle usually runs until we turn it off. But at higher RPMs the head seems to "rumble".

So i dug out the maintenance manual saw how to remove the bearing through the circular plate at the top of the head. The bearing seems fine, the inner and out raceways show no visible damage and the beraing rolls smoothly. But i figured would it hurt to replace something so easy to get at?

The spindle speed "regulator" doens't work to well, so I will probably look into that soon as well, but i did notice lots of "black stuff" inside the head and i'm guessing it is ground up BELT material. So i'm wondering if i should take care of this now, before it breaks.

You guys have always been a great source of knowledge and i'm hoping you can help, there doens't seem to be anyone in the area that works on these machines anymore. Any help you can provide would be GREATLY appreciated.

Brian

Brian,

I've had exactly the same problem, but it only happened when the machine didn't run for a while. When I'm working on it every day, or every few days I've got no problems with it. I've already wasted an end mill with it when the spindle stopped running. It looks like some heat securety to me but I didn't found anything. I'll keep reading this thread, hope somebody got an anwer for this.

Belt and bearings are standard 2J head parts.
Google for Bridgeport parts or look on E-pay.

The bushings inside the sliding Vari-discs go first before the bearings causing a rumble as these discs wobble.

George,

do you know where i can get those bushing from? The google search I did, as per Scott's suggestion only lead me to replacement parts for BP S1 Knee Mills, not the heads for the CNC machines.

The 2 hp heads of the CNC and the standard 2j head are virtually the same.

Here is a 2j rebuild kit that includes all top end parts that are wear items. I rebuilt 2 CNC machines with this kit and was very happy with it- and the service H&W provided.

As stated, The 2Hp vari drive parts are the same. The bushing are epoxyied into the vari drives. When rebuilding a head, I cannot do this without making a fixture to make sure that the varidisc will run true and be balanced. Thus I purchase new vari discs since I guarantee my work. Newer motor adjustable varidiscs have a much thicker green insert. It lasts longer but is not replaceable.
