I just bought a new (to me) Bridgeport Series II CNC mill from an auction at our local Delphi plant. They liquidated their model shop/prototype room, and shuffled their existing toolroom around to add a new line. I paid $2800 for the mill, including all taxes & buyer fees. I was
really hoping for a manual Series II, but it went for too much (nearly $5k), as with many of the other lathes, mills, grinders...etc. Hopefully it works when I get it home! I've got a journeyman machinist card and spent 9 years at a job shop doing nearly everything, spent a little under a year doing field service for Makino, and now I'm involved in tooling. I'm buying machines here and there with my former co-worker so I can satisfy my urge for 'government projects' and to grab a little cash on the side. I've always wanted a series II, just for the little extra ridgity and the NMTB40 spindle.
I don't know much about this control (or the Series 2's) at all. I have plenty of experience on manual Series 1's, HAAS, and a little Makino/Fanuc. Is there anything I should watch out for, any "must know" information, or quirks that I'm unaware of? Is it possible to program conversationally from control, or if from a computer, what do I need to get up and running there? I've seen the machine in person, but not up and running. Is there a good source for parts for parts other than ebay? Is there any 'easy' way to install manual safety handles on the axes? Any good source for manuals, especially on the control? Anything special as far as installation? I'll be getting a rotary convertor to power this and a couple other machines, lathe...etc.- any rule of thumb there?
I appreciate your time and help!!
