Spindle Demo

Can someone tell me how to remove the spindle and bearings without damage. I peeked and poked but i do not want to do anything to damage this thing. I want to reuse the spindle for a CNC project so i can reuse all my R8 tooling. I found the setscrew on the side and took off the nut that loads the bearings. Are the 2 holes on the end roll pins? Are the bearings pressed into or onto something?

I was told that this was out of a "J" head bridgeport if that helps.

What do you say men, can we do this!!

Thanks!

Steve

Now unscrew the spindle nose. It is right hand thread. I use a spanner wrench that has 2 pins in it 3/16 of an inch in diameter. Now tap out the spindle assembly as a unit with a mallet.

The 2 holes in the bottom are to unthread the nose from the tube!!!!

Will the bearings come out or are they press fit into the cylinder?

Thanks

I just had 2 - 18 inch pipe wrenches on and the nose wont unscrew. If you are sure about the right hand thread, I will take it to work and put it in the chain vise and really give it a good reef.

Sindle removal

Hello there If you place that spindle tube as you call it into a chain vice you may as well through it straight into the scrap bin, if you haven't damaged it put it back into the machine and then try and unlock it after first removing the grub screw at the rear, these spindles are honed to to very close fit into the bore of the mill head and a chain vice would totally destroy that fit, and don't put heat on it . Best of luck Colin.

Once i get the spindle and bearings out of it I am throwing the tube into the scrap bin. I just cant get the nose loose. Yes the grub screw is out. I dont have the rest of the machine to put it in so i thought the chain vise was the next best thing.

This is probably not a new spindle and may have been abused. Typically someone who should NOT be touching the machine tries to unscrew the nose without removing that screw in the back of the quill. Then they destroy the threads and now you have one piece.
I have had to put these in a lathe and cut the nose out.
If the nose piece is off, The spindle comes out as an ASSEMBLY as I said. It consists of the 3 bearings, spacers, spindle, dust shield lock nut and washer, etc. Unless someone took the nut off without telling you.

The spindle was not abused. Turns out it had a left hand thread and once i figured that out it came right apart.

I would like to thank you for the help. I'm not sure i would have figured it out before damaging things.

Thanks to everybody that helped!!
