My BP quill has begun to get harder progressively to pull down. Is there a wear part(s) that the quill rubs on? How do I replace it/them? It is a pulley drive 1 HP. How do I remove the Quill to get to them. I have the drawing. Can someone Help? |

| This is an age old problem. You have had swarf in the gap between the end of the quill and the bearing holder. As the quill is retracted, and the quill goes to it's full "up" position, the swarf, chips and whatever "gall" the inside of the quill housing for about the first half inch or so. The Fix: Remove the top end of the head. Motor, belt housing. Look down into the top of the quill housing and remove the screw that holds the gaurd that is behind the depth stop (this a sheet metal partial tube). Drop (gently) the quill out the bottom of the head casting (rotate the head parallel to the table). After getting the quill out, emory the inside of the housing ever so slightly about a half inch in or so with some 400-600 grit wet/dry emory paper, clean with solvent or kerosene. Re-install quill, top end and motor. The solution to no let this happen again: Turn a plastic disk about an inch in diameter and about 5/8" thick. Drill a 1/2" dia hole thru the center. Cut a section out so you end up with a "U" shaped part that will "snap" around the top end of the threaded screw that holds the adjusting nuts on the depth stop. The only dis-advantage with this is if you bore a hole from the bottom to the top, you have no automatic "up kick out" with the disk in place. It can be removed very easily if you need the kick out to work, but be careful while the plastic stop is not in place. I will take some pictures and post in the next few days. Good luck! |

Thanks DJ, I wondered if part #128, Quill skirt went between the Quill and the Cast Iron Head? It could be worn. Another symptom is that the Quill lock has to be turned all the way down to lock the quill. How do you examine. replace the Quill skirt ? I am a retired electrical engineer who wants to build/finish my home made CNC. Ornamental Lathe. I was forced to teach myself Machining, bought an old Bridgeport, etc. I was wondering if you could help me with my other post concerning power down feed? The Handle turns, the Forward /Reverse lever will not stay engaged. but even though the leaver is held to the left the quill will not feed up or down. The power feed used to work. What are the most likely parts to fail? Mike |

| The quill pinion shaft runs in a brass sleeve. That could need grease. The quill could be galled. I have seen the spindle splines have a slight twist and thus dragged in the splined gear hub. oil the clock spring. The quill skirt rarely was a issue but to replace it the top of the head comes off the quill housing. Unfortunately there are a lot of parts associated with the quill moving and each needs to be examined and deleted as the cause. George
