| They should be pretty quiet and smooth. It is normal to have a knocking sound on a used machine during heavy or interrupted cuts. The knocking comes from the drive spline. Is there anything else you can think of to describe this noise and exactly when it occurs? You mentioned it's quiet in neutral - how are you selecting neutral? Is the noise relative to spindle speed or is it constant? Is it quieter at higher RPM? Do you have the downfeed engaged? Scott

| the noise is there when i am not cutting or cutting,it was quieter when i first installed the motor and put it back together.the noise is not constant it changes as it turns the spindle. it is louder at higher rpms. there is a lever on the side at the top of the machine on the right that i change from high, neutral ,and low. it sounds like something is loose, i tightend everything good.any and every suggestion you could think of might trigger me in to something i might have done wrong. thanks alex |

| There are numerous possibilities. The spindle pulley is riding on a set of bearings. There is a large gear, called the back gear, inside a thin housing below the pulley case and there is a smaller spur gear also. These sound like the most likely culprits to me. Diagnosing over the internet is a bit difficult... Isolate these items and check them one at a time and the problem will stick out. Scott

| Based upon the single shift lever, you must have the variable speed head, not the step pulley head. The most common reason for this are the movable pulley (vari-drive) bushings being worn out. This includes the front and the motor adjustable pulley. George
